Alabama Board to Promote Installations’ Value
Alabama’s new Military Stability Commission is expected to promote the state’s four installations in an effort to head off downsizings through base closure or other means.
The state legislature approved the commission last year, assigning it the mission of studying the strengths and weaknesses of each installation, drafting a plan to improve services and advocating on their behalf to DOD leaders, reported the Anniston Star.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty right now that we’re facing over the next five years as the defense cuts come down and there’s the possibility of BRAC,” said Nathan Hill, the city of Anniston’s representative on the commission. City officials are particularly concerned about a steady decline in workload at Anniston Army Depot since 2008. The state’s other installations are Redstone Arsenal, Maxwell-Gunter AFB and Fort Rucker.
