The Fort Monroe Authority is responsible for managing nearly 200 family housing units at Fort Monroe, as well as several commercial and recreational buildings, after signing a lease agreement with the Army that went into effect Aug. 1.

Coming six weeks before the Army’s departure from Monroe on Sept. 15, the agreement is a significant milestone for the authority. The transfer represents a key component of its plan to provide a smooth transition for the post from Army ownership and management to public use, according to a written statement from the authority.

The transfer of residential units from the Army to the LRA has allowed many military families the opportunity to stay in their homes and make the commute to Fort Eustis and other military installations in the Hampton Roads area without relocating, according to the statement. The agreement benefits the Army as well, reducing the number of buildings it would be forced to mothball next month.
