BRAC Changes Bring Confusion for Names of San Antonio Medical Facilities
- September 21, 2011
With the BRAC changes in full force following the Sept. 15 implementation deadline, San Antonio military officials held a press conference to clarify the new names and roles assigned to the city’s reorganized medical facilities.
Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), at Fort Sam Houston, is now the San Antonio Military Medical Center, serving the Army and Air Force. But the BAMC name still exists; it now refers to the organization responsible for the medical center and other Army facilities in the area, reported the San Antonio Express-News.
Wilford Hall Medical Center, at Lackland AFB, is now the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, signaling its new role as an outpatient facility. And the new joint operation managing patient care for the Army and Air Force is called the San Antonio Military Health System.
