Chamber Urges Employers to Consider Military Spouses

Despite being more educated than their peers, military spouses are experiencing a 26 percent unemployment rate, with the problem of underemployment likely exacerbating the problem.

And for spouses that are employed, there is a 42 percent wage gap across professions in comparison to their civilian counterparts. Of course, military spouses have to cope with a number of other difficulties as well, including long deployments and frequent moves.

To address the challenges spouses face in the marketplace, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is launching an initiative to bring the public and private sectors together to find employment for military spouses, Laura Dempsey, director of the chamber’s military spouse program, writes in a commentary in Politico.

The Hiring Our Heroes initiative is calling on employers to:

  • provide networking and mentoring to military spouses to inform them about career tracks within their organizations;
  • ensure spouses have access to training and opportunities with companies to provide upward mobility; and
  • participate in career fairs to connect spouses to local jobs.
