Commentary: Housing Development Would Threaten Point Mugu
- June 28, 2011
The Oxnard City Council should postpone a vote expected to approve a 1,500-home development near Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu if lawmakers don’t want to lose 7,000 civilian jobs and suffer other harmful economic effects, according to a commentary in the Ventura County Star.
The piece blames a confluence of factors for bringing Oxnard to this point — the inability of the Navy to take a firm stand against the project; the absence of the base’s local support organization from the debate over the issue; the city’s failure to approve an update of its general plan, which includes a chapter on military installations; and the lack of recent data on the impact of jet aircraft noise from Point Mugu.
To ensure a proper hearing on the issue, the commentary states, the city council should delay this week’s vote and more carefully investigate the potential for the Southern California installation to close if the proposed project goes forward.
