Communities Supporting Sheppard AFB Awarded Altus Trophy
Wichita Falls and three neighboring communities in north central Texas received the Altus Trophy earlier this month for providing “outstanding support” to Sheppard Air Force Base.
The trophy is awarded annually to a civilian community for partnering with an Air Education and Training Command base.
“Winning the trophy is a great honor not only for Sheppard Air Force Base and Wichita Falls but for our citizens in our community as well,” said Wichita Falls Mayor Glenn Barham, who accepted the award on behalf of Burkburnett, Electra and Iowa Park as well.
The four communities’ support is led by the Sheppard Military Affairs Committee, which strives to protect the base from the loss of missions, pursues new missions and seeks to increase the base’s economic impact, according to the Times Record News.
“The partnership that we have is unlike any other base in the Air Force. In my 30 years I have never seen this type of support, and I think the recognition that they received today is maybe in some cases long overdue,” said Brig. Gen. Darryl Burke, 82nd Training Wing commander.
