Construction of Army’s First Turbine Winds up at Tooele Depot
- July 13, 2011
The Army last week held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Tooele Army Depot in northern Utah to mark the completion of the first wind turbine at an Army installation.
The 262-foot turbine has 126-foot-long blades and will generate 1.5 megawatts of electricity, saving the depot $200,000 per year. The site averages wind speeds of 14 miles per hour, which exceeds the 12-mph threshold needed to generate electricity, reported Deseret News.
The $3.8 million project was funded through the Energy Conservation and Investment Program.
