Construction Surge Nears End in San Antonio
After four years and roughly $2 billion in construction projects, the massive effort to ready San Antonio bases for BRAC 2005 is almost complete.
Only several of the planned 75 facilities are still under construction, with the most prominent being the expansion and renovation of Brooke Army Medical Center — which shortly will become the San Antonio Military Medical Center — at Fort Sam Houston, reported the San Antonio Express-News. Work also continues at Fort Sam on the campus being built to house the headquarters for Installation Management Command. Employees are expected to start moving into the main headquarters building by the end of the month.
While the pace of construction activity will drop after September, approximately $200 million to $300 million annually in non-BRAC military construction spending has been proposed for area installations through FY 2015.
