The Federal Highway Administration has awarded $450,000 to the state of Virginia to implement a dynamic ridesharing pilot program to address BRAC-related traffic in the Washington region.

Through a range of cash incentives, the value pricing program will recruit 500 drivers and 1,000 riders, focusing on employees whose commutes were affected by BRAC, according to a statement from the office of Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.). A telecommunications firm will use software that will connect with GPS-enabled smartphones to find and complete ride matches, track and record journeys, and transfer money. The award will cover a six-month pilot project.

“Our roadways are already overcrowded, and the BRAC relocations will simply compound this traffic congestion,” said Moran.
