Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk (R) has been named ranking member on the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee. He will be joined on the minority side of the panel by three other freshman senators — Roy Blunt (Mo.), John Hoeven (N.D.) and Dan Coats (Ind.) — along with three existing members. Kay Bailey Hutchison (Texas) relinquished the subcommittee’s top Republican spot to become the ranking member on the Commerce-Justice-Science panel, but will remain on the milcon subcommittee.

In a written statement, Kirk, a 20-year veteran of the Naval Reserves, said his proudest achievement during the 10 years he served as a congressman was helping to broker the agreement that saved the North Chicago Veterans Affairs Medical Center from closing. As a result of a unique partnership, the departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense (Naval Health Clinic Great Lakes) are merging their facilities and services in North Chicago to form the Capt. Lovell Federal Health Center.

The full Republican lineup:

  • Mark Kirk, ranking (Ill.)
  • Kay Bailey Hutchison (Texas)
  • Mitch McConnell (Ky.)
  • Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)
  • Roy Blunt (Mo.)
  • John Hoeven (N.D.)
  • Dan Coats (Ind.)

The majority side of the milcon spending panel will have only one new face, Jon Tester (Mont.). Democrats will have one less member than previously, and will have only a one-seat advantage over the Republicans. Tim Johnson (S.D.) remains the subcommittee chairman. The full Democratic lineup:

  • Tim Johnson, chairman (S.D.)
  • Daniel Inouye (Hawaii)
  • Mary Landrieu (La.)
  • Patty Murray (Wash.)
  • Jack Reed (R.I.)
  • Ben Nelson (Neb.)
  • Mark Pryor (Ark.)
  • Jon Tester (Mont.)

The Senate Armed Services Committee has not yet determined the makeup of its subcommittees for the 112th Congress.
