A four-square block area containing World War II-era Army barracks buildings at the former Fort Chaffee in western Arkansas has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, the Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority said last week.

The Camp Chaffee Tank Destroyer Battalion District is best known for housing the Barbershop Museum where Elvis Presley received his famous Army buzz cut in 1958. The designation is expected to provide a boost to the development of Chaffee Crossing, the reuse project at the former post, by providing tax credits to anyone renovating a building in the district according to historic guidelines, reported the Times Record.

Last month, the redevelopment authority’s planner was honored for its Chaffee Crossing Historic Area master plan. That plan calls for pedestrian-friendly tourist attraction with a main street shopping mall.
