For many defense communities benefitting from mission growth, next week’s BRAC implementation deadline will feel more like the beginning of a lengthy challenge than the end of one. Officials at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., for example, are considering Sept. 15 as a benchmark more than anything else.

“I fully expect 15 September to come and go like any other day,” Garrison Commander Col. John Hamilton told the Huntsville Times.

About 4,650 workers have come to the arsenal over the last five years, but population and economic growth around Huntsville is expected to continue for at least 10 years. Estimates project that from 5,000 to 10,000 new jobs will be generated to directly support the new activities coming to Redstone, and an additional 9,000 indirect jobs will be created to serve the expanding region.

The changing nature of the post — with a greater emphasis on research and development and contracting — could attract non-BRAC growth as the Army contemplates moving other commands and programs to the arsenal to exploit potential synergies, according to the story.
