The city of Hampton plans to ask Virginia for $6 million to purchase land in the clear zones around Langley Air Force Base to protect the installation from encroachment.

If the request is successful, Hampton would contribute $6 million as well, reported the Daily Press. The initiative to ensure land uses surrounding Langley are compatible with the airfield was recommended in the joint land use study for the base that Hampton and neighboring entities completed last year.

The city is hoping to obtain state funding using a similar approach to the way Virginia Beach and the commonwealth have partnered to eliminate incompatible land uses around Naval Air Station Oceana.
