House Budget Cuts Get Personal; Republicans Hit Presidio Trust
In what has been termed a swipe at House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), House Republicans last week approved an amendment that would eliminate federal funding for the Presidio Trust during debate over the continuing resolution to fund the federal government through the end of fiscal 2011. The trust, the nonprofit established by Congress to administer the Presidio of San Francisco after it was shuttered in 1994, had been slated to receive $15 million in 2011. The amendment was sponsored by two Republican newcomers.
Pelosi vowed to fight the cut, arguing the action could result in higher future obligations by the federal government as the trust currently is on course to be financially self-sufficient by FY 2013, reported the Bay Citizen.
“From its creation, we intended the Presidio to eventually become financially self-sustaining; every year, the federal investment required for the Presidio decreases. … I will fight alongside Senators Feinstein and Boxer to ensure that this damaging provision never becomes law,” said the former House Speaker.
