Redevelopment funds pledged for the revitalization of the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco will not be affected if Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposal to eliminate the state’s 425 redevelopment agencies is approved by the California legislature, a state official said last week.

The governor never intended to disrupt projects that are under contract or under way, stated a manager in the state’s Department of Finance, reported the San Francisco Examiner. “I’m here also to add our support of the [Hunters Point] project and acknowledge that this is exactly what the redevelopment has been used for and is a good project,” the official said.

Brown’s proposal is designed as a way to free up billions of dollars for schools and local government, helping the state meet its budget shortfall.
