Jill Biden Praises S. California Schools for Supporting Military Students
- January 23, 2012
At a meeting with educators in California last week, Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, showcased the achievements of a local program attempting to establish a military-friendly environment by spreading the word about effective military family programs and resources, and by raising military family awareness throughout the Southern California school system.
The Building Capacity in Military-connected Schools project is a partnership of eight Southern California school districts, the Department of Defense Education Activity and the University of Southern California. One effort discussed was the creation of transition rooms at 11 San Diego-area schools dedicated to welcoming military families into the school and community, reported American Forces Press Service. The rooms are used to familiarize families with local resources and to get to know other military families.
Biden’s visit was intended to discuss how schools can provide better support for their students who have a parent serving in the military. Children with parents in the military face many obstacles, she noted, including changing schools during their parents’ frequent reassignments and dealing with the difficulties of long deployments. Biden also commended meeting participants for taking up the challenge of Joining Forces, the initiative First Lady Michelle Obama and Biden launched last year to raise awareness of service members, veterans and their families.
