Lawmakers Asks Federal Agencies for Property Disposal Plans

The chairman and a minority member of the Senate subcommittee overseeing federal real estate are asking eight federal agencies to outline their plans for selling excess real estate.
Tom Carper (D-Del.), chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) sent letters Wednesday to the agencies requesting they identify their excess properties and describe existing plans to reduce the cost of owned and leased property, reported The Hill.
“It’s critical that agencies come up with innovative property management tools to expeditiously dispose assets they no longer need and take better care of those that they do need,” the senators wrote. The General Services Administration and the departments of Agriculture, Energy, Homeland Security, Interior, Justice, State and Veteran Affairs received letters.
In June, the subcommittee held a hearing to assess the problem of how to dispose of thousands of unneeded properties, most likely through a panel similar to the BRAC commission.
