Lawmakers Zero in on Air National Guard Cuts
- March 15, 2012
Senators grilled the Air Force’s top two officials Wednesday about the impact proposed force structure changes to the Air National Guard would have on home state bases and units.
Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R), for instance, brought a map to the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee hearing showing the strategic location of Eielson Air Force Base, which is slated to lose a squadron of F-16s, reported AOL Defense.
Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander (R) asked Secretary Michael Donley and Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz about the possibility of bringing more C-17 cargo planes to Memphis and also about how the reorganization of Air Force Material Command would affect Arnold AFB testing sites. He was reassured on both counts.
The protests from the panel about the Air Force’s force structure changes would seem to make it unlikely that lawmakers will approve the Pentagon’s request for new BRAC rounds, according to the story.
A webcast of the hearing is available on the committee’s website.
