The reuse plan for the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington is one step closer to gaining approval from the city council after the property’s LRA endorsed the plan last month.

Redevelopment likely can’t begin for several years, as the Army is not expected to convey the site for at least 15 months, reported the Washington City Paper. The plan calls for 3.1 million square feet of development on the city’s 67.5-acre parcel, with more than half devoted to residential use, a quarter for office space and the remaining retail and creative space. The city has selected five nonprofits to receive space on the campus.

Officials are preparing a solicitation for a master developer, according to the City Paper. The LRA needed to update the plan after the Army redrew the boundaries of the 113-acre site last year.
