Colorado-based Matrix Design Group was awarded the Outstanding Collaborative Planning Project by the American Planning Association’s Federal Planning Division for helping communities in northwest Florida implement recommendations in the joint land use study for Eglin Air Force Base.
Matrix’s effort was cited as “an outstanding example of collaboration between federal, state, jurisdictions and local stakeholders to manage the interface between community land uses and military activities.” The plan included the development of a series of small area studies across three counties and four cities partnering with Eglin to prevent encroachment.
The objective of the plan was to ensure future growth around Eglin AFB and its range reservation is compatible with Eglin’s current and future mission requirements. Matrix worked closely with local jurisdictions to update regulations, including comprehensive plan policies and zoning ordinances. The close working relationship helped to streamline the process for implementing the new regulations in each jurisdiction. This effort encouraged public input and support for the proposed recommendations through multiple opportunities for passive and active public participation.
This is the third time Matrix received this American Planning Association award. Matrix Design Group is an award-winning, interdisciplinary firm specializing in planning, engineering, environmental, transportation and consulting services to clients across the U.S. for both active and closed defense communities.
