Montana Official to Head up Labor’s VETS Program
- January 15, 2013
The Senate confirmed Keith Kelly, commissioner of the Montana Department of Labor and Industry, earlier this month to be the Labor Department’s assistant secretary for the Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS).
“Keith Kelly’s appointment is welcome news for Montana’s and our nation’s veterans. Keith’s experience as an infantryman and as Montana’s labor commissioner will serve him well in his new role,” said Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who recommended Kelly for the position.
Kelly was awarded a Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for his service with the Army’s 101st Airborne Division.
Kelly said he would improve outreach to service members and veterans to ensure they can take advantage of programs to help them find civilian jobs, according to prepared testimony he submitted to the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee last month.
He said he would “fully implement and continuously improve” the revamped Transition Assistance Program, reported the Washington Post. “All too often, those who have given so much for America face a difficult transition back to civilian life and struggle to find a job worthy of their talents,” Kelly said.
