N.Y. National Guard Base Could Test UAVs, Schumer Says
- January 16, 2012
In a bid to boost development in central New York, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D) is asking the Federal Aviation Administration to designate Hancock Field Air National Guard Base in Syracuse as a testing site for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The request comes as the fiscal 2012 defense authorization bill requires the FAA to integrate UAVs into the national airspace system at six sites.
Selecting Hancock also would provide critical training for Air National Guard crews that would allow them to support operations during a natural or man-made disaster, as well as missions overseas, Col. Greg Semmel, assistant vice commander of the 174th Fighter Wing, told YNN.com.
