Navy, Energy Company Negotiating EUL for Natural Gas Plant at Maryland Facility
- December 8, 2011
Constellation Energy and the Navy are negotiating details of an enhanced use lease (EUL) at Naval Support Facility Indian Head, Md., which calls for construction of a 30-megawatt natural gas power plant, a 200,000-square-foot data center and a 250,000-square-foot office building.
The project is estimated to cost between $300 million and $400 million and take up to 18 months to build, reported Southern Maryland Newspapers. Discussions between the two parties are expected to last through much of next year. The power plant will supply the Navy as well as other customers of the Baltimore-based power company.
Meanwhile, some local officials are concerned the project will compete with the planned Indian Head Science and Technology Park located outside of the naval installation. The support facility is 30 miles south of Washington and employs about 3,500 personnel.
