Navy Opts to Retain Housing at NS Pascagoula
- August 18, 2011
The Navy has decided to retain a 33-acre housing facility that had been slated to close along with Naval Station Pascagoula, Miss., under BRAC 2005.
The LRA established by Jackson County in 2006 to plan for the redevelopment of Lakeside Manor had recommended that the facility continue to house Navy crewmembers assigned to ships under construction at Ingalls Shipbuilding. Rather than transferring the property to the private sector, the Navy simply will keep the site.
The Naval Construction Battalion Center at Gulfport will manage the housing property, reported the Mississippi Press. Some recreational facilities at Lakeside Manor will be conveyed to the city of Pascagoula shortly.
The Navy returned the naval station, located on Singing River Island, to the state of Mississippi in 2007.
