Starting this fall, the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) will offer the military’s first graduate program in energy, a move intended to advance the service’s effort to improve its energy security.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus announced the initiative last month during a speech at the Monterey, Calif., school.

“Energy is not just an issue for the future, or just the young officers and policy experts that make up NPS’s student population. It is an issue for all levels of the Navy and Marine Corps, uniform and civilian,” Mabus told students and faculty members.

Next year, the school will launch the SECNAV Executive Energy series, two-week programs for senior civilians covering specific energy issues.
