North County School Districts Form Support Groups for Military Kids
Smaller school districts outside of Fort Drum, N.Y., are increasingly forming support groups for the students of military families, reports the Watertown Daily Times.
Unlike the larger districts that neighbor the North Country post, these districts previously did not have large populations of military students but, more recently, have seen the number of military families grow. The support groups are primarily designed to help kids cope while a parent is deployed.
New York State Operation Military Kids has been working with Fort Drum’s school liaison officers to support children in the smaller school districts. The organization’s staff meets monthly with military dependents to address topics such as emotions, patriotism and the culture of the different branches of the military, according to the story.
