The Greater Omaha Chamber has been selected by ADC as the Active Base Community of the Year, a tribute to the organization’s ability to build partnerships among community and industry leaders, government representatives, and local military officials in the name of advancing the missions at Offutt Air Force Base and supporting its personnel.

The chamber’s support for Offutt has taken many forms. The chamber has led efforts to purchase land outside Offutt to preserve the viability of missions there. Recently the chamber aided the purchase of a site bordering the installation that was slated to be used for an activity that would have interfered with training at the base. Now the parcel is available for use by the Air Force.

The chamber has sponsored multiple legislative initiatives intended to meet the needs of the installation and the personnel stationed there. It also has spearheaded initiatives to secure new missions for Offutt. Through the military target advisory group, the chamber coordinated the response of the community with Offutt officials to the Air Force’s data call in 2009 as part of its search for a home for the newly created Global Strike Command. As a result of the chamber’s leadership of the advisory group, 65 companies that support Offutt, employing 3,600 workers, are located in Omaha.

“I commend the Greater Omaha Chamber for taking a leadership role. Their efforts have brought national and international recognition to the military installations and surrounding communities,” said Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman.

The chamber will be recognized during the Defense Community Awards lunch at the ADC 2011 Annual Conference on Tuesday, July 19.
