Onizuka AFS to House Community College Campus
The city of Sunnyvale, Calif., is supporting the request of a local community college to establish a new campus on 9.6 acres at the former Onizuka Air Force Station, located in Silicon Valley.
The Foothill-De Anza Community College District would obtain the property from the Air Force at no cost through a public benefit conveyance. The college district still would need to spend about $5 million to demolish the existing buildings at the site, the Mercury News reported.
The college district chose the site for an education center due to its convenient access to a growing population center, along with the ability to obtain the tract at no cost, according to the story. The Veterans Administration will receive 4.1 acres at the 23-acre Onizuka property for research activities.
