A technology demonstration involving all three services, local utilities, the state of Hawaii and several federal agencies is evaluating how smart grid technologies can reduce the risk of an extended electric grid outage on installations.

The project is included in the Air Force’s new Energy Horizons paper, a 72-page description of how the service plans to increase energy supply, reduce demand and change its culture to meet mission requirements. In addition to infrastructure energies, the paper discusses the cyber, space and air realm, along with emerging technologies that will advance the service’s energy efficiency efforts.

The paper covers infrastructure technologies for improving energy and water efficiency, energy storage and the use of renewable sources, and notes in which ones the Air Force will strive to be a technology leader.
