Pentagon Needs to Contribute to Debt Reduction, Gates Says
- May 25, 2011
Defense spending is not the cause of the nation’s fiscal crisis, but DOD’s budget will be called on to help reduce the growing debt, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said during a speech Tuesday.
“As a matter of simple arithmetic and political reality, the Department of Defense must be at least part of the solution,” Gates told the audience at the American Enterprise Institute, reported American Forces Press Service.
And while more can be done to trim overhead spending at the Pentagon, the nation’s leaders will need to make difficult decisions about military priorities to achieve the necessary savings — $400 billion over the next 12 years.
“I believe there are more savings possible by culling more overhead and better accounting for, and thus better managing, the funds and people we have,” Gates said. “But one thing is quite clear: these efficiencies efforts will not come close to meeting the budget targets laid out by the president, much less other, higher targets being bandied about.”
