The integration of Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) and Wilford Hall medical centers will be complete this week, in time to comply with the 2005 BRAC requirement, according to the San Antonio Express-News.  On September 15, the two facilities will officially change their names, with BAMC transitioning to the San Antonio Military Medical Center, and Wilford Hall becoming the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center.  Both facilities will fall under the San Antonio Military Health System, a new office that provides oversight for clinical, educational and business operations for all military treatment facilities in the San Antonio region.

As part of this historic transformation, the San Antonio Military Medical Center will be commanded by an Army General Officer with an Air Force Deputy Commander of Clinical Services, while the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center will be commanded by an Air Force General Officer with an Army Deputy Commander.

The San Antonio Military Medical Center will primarily be responsible for inpatient care, and Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center will be the largest ambulatory surgical center under the command of the 59th Medical Wing.
