Southern California Base Needs Protection from Encroachment, Navy Says
- March 6, 2011
Representatives from Naval Base Ventura County — made up of Point Mugu Naval Air Station, the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme and San Nicolas Island — are warning local officials about the dangers of incompatible urban development.
“Ultimately, we’re concerned the mission could get reduced,” a community planner for the Navy told the county board of supervisors last month, reported the Ventura County Star. The base commander is urging county and municipal officials to create military influence areas in their general plans, zones where the Navy’s mission would be considered when construction projects are under review.
Now the naval base is asking Camarillo officials to take into account the impact of flight training when planning a large-scale mixed-use development that partially overlaps the Navy’s proposed military influence area, according to the paper.
