In response to the significant financial commitments considered by communities neighboring Robins Air Force Base to limit encroachment threatening the Middle Georgia base, the state of Georgia confirmed it will chip in about $7.5 million to the effort.

Last November, Bibb County voters approved a $6 million special purpose local option sales tax to purchase homes beyond the base’s airfield. In March, Houston County residents will vote on a similar 1-cent sales tax referendum that would raise an estimated $7 million to fight encroachment. The three separate initiatives are expected to cover the cost of purchasing 250 properties spread over 1,600 acres in the two counties, reported the Warner Robins Patriot.

More than 30 properties already have been purchased, with 60 more slated to be added shortly.
