Unemployment Rate for Female Veterans Outpaces Overall Figure

The unemployment rate for female veterans and young veterans far exceeds the overall rate for military veterans, according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

While the jobless rate in December among all veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan was 13.1 percent, nearly 22 percent of female veterans who served during those conflicts were unemployed last month. Veterans of both sexes between the ages of 18 and 24 experienced a 33.2 percent unemployment rate in the last quarter of 2011, more than twice the rate of their civilian peers, reported USA Today.

Economists blame high joblessness among young veterans on their lack of marketable skills in the civilian marketplace. The elevated rate for female veterans may result from their propensity to work in education and other public sector fields, areas suffering significant reductions, according to the story.

Overall, the nation posted an 8.5 percent unemployment rate in December.
