Workforce groups in Dallas this week launched a new initiative intended to put a dent in the high rates of unemployment among military veterans and the long-term unemployed.

The Dallas effort — sponsored by Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas and the YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas — is the first community to benefit from the national expansion of the Platform to Employment program, which was started in Connecticut by The WorkPlace, a regional workforce development board in Bridgeport. The program was featured on 60 Minutes last year.

In Dallas, 24 participants will go through five weeks of training before starting an eight-week subsidized internship at a local company that could turn into a full-time job, reported the Dallas Morning News. The expansion of the program to 10 cities is supported by AARP Foundation, Citi Community Development and the Walmart Foundation, which added the veterans focus.
