Welcome to Ft. Lee, ‘Logistics Capital of the World’
In the six years since the BRAC 2005 recommendations were enacted, Fort Lee has been transformed into the home of the Army Sustainment Center of Excellence, a campus of schools preparing soldiers to pursue careers in military supply, munitions and transportation.
The changes spawned by BRAC mean the central Virginia post is now responsible for training 38 percent of the Army, reported the Richmond Times-Dispatch. As a result of the makeover, Lee’s buildings and facilities have doubled in size to 14 million square feet, courtesy of a $1.4 billion injection of construction funding.
Virtually all of the permanent personnel slated to move to the installation arrived ahead of the Sept. 15 deadline. Lee will have a total population of 44,600, including service members, DOD civilians and contractors. Most of the military personnel are students; the post will train nearly 70,000 students annually across all services, reported the Times-Dispatch.
