Winter Forum to Deliver Low Down on the ‘New Normal’

The challenges facing defense communities are numerous — looming defense cuts possibly approaching $1 trillion, a proposed BRAC round, and a variety of service-led restructuring initiatives designed to improve efficiency. Surviving and moving ahead amid this “new normal” requires a thorough understanding of what is happening at the Pentagon, in D.C., and around the nation over the coming years.
The ADC 2012 Winter Forum, scheduled for Feb. 27-29 in Miami, will bring the nation’s top military installation experts and defense community leaders together to work the tough issues and to promote the best opportunities and tools available to prepare communities for the challenges that lie ahead.
Over 30 sessions — including pre-conference workshops, town hall meetings and service briefings — will cover the array of issues facing defense communities. Here are some of the sessions that will specifically address the changes going on now in Washington and in DoD:
- The New Normal: Budget Challenges, Efficiency Initiatives and a Future BRAC — the president’s budget has just been released and defense cuts are coming. This panel of leading defense experts will discuss the current environment in Washington, D.C., and provide an overview of how cuts to the Pentagon’s budget may affect defense communities in the coming year.
- Preparing Your Community for Defense Cuts and Next BRAC — with the recent call for BRAC, defense communities across the country have begun to organize and prepare for potential base closures. All community stakeholders are eager to learn how and when BRAC may impact them. Community leaders must convey timely and accurate information in addition to organizing all interested parties. This panel will discuss how communities have responded in the past when BRAC was on the horizon and what other communities can be doing to prepare.
- BRAC 101: An Introduction to the Process, Politics & Possibilities — this special pre-conference session will focus on the potential BRAC process and how previous BRAC rounds have been organized. Learn from experts about how the BRAC Commission works and how your community may be affected.
- Installation Leadership Forum – ADC welcomes leaders from each of the military services to discuss installation management issues and efficiency initiatives. As DoD and defense communities face new challenges with limited resources, how will the military services find efficiencies? What are the roles of public-public and public-private initiatives? How will budget cuts impact defense communities?
