The Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority is selling two residential parcels that could be used for permanent housing by residents who lost their homes in Hurricane Sandy and no longer want to live in a floodplain. The Navy continues to test soil in one portion of the former Naval Training Center Orlando to determine the boundaries of newly discovered contamination. The Navy expects to finish removing contaminated soil within a year after it completes testing, reported the Orlando Sentinel. For residents, the discovery is setting back plans to open Orlando’s first mountain bike park. It also is proving frustrating as the Navy already has ripped up parts of the bike track built by volunteers in its search for contamination. The Navy previously performed an extensive cleanup of the tract before turning it over to the city for use as a park in 2009.

The General Services Administration is bolstering efforts to auction unneeded federal properties as part of a push to identify and dispose of surplus facilities. GSA is working with other agencies to accelerate the process of preparing unneeded properties for sale and moving them to market, reported Federal Times. Last year the agency sold 79 properties for $37 million, and this year it plans to surpass that pace …

The California State Lands Commission last week approved an exchange agreement for Naval Air Station Alameda, helping pave the way for redevelopment of the parcel now known as Alameda Point. The deal call for lands along the waterfront to be placed in the public trust, a first step toward opening public access to the waterfront and attracting maritime commerce. While cleanup of the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant in Baraboo, Wis., continues, many portions of the 7,354-acre property are moving toward their planned reuses. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will receive 3,800 acres for the Sauk Prairie Recreation Area. The agency now is in the middle of a planning process to determine what activities will be allowed on the tract. The plan is expected to be completed in early 2014 …

Next month the federal government will find out if its latest attempt to dispose of the former Stratford Army Engine Plant in Connecticut is successful. Point Stratford Renewal, a joint effort of at least three Connecticut firms, has until Nov. 6 to execute the purchase agreement it reached with the General Services Administration in August, reported the Connecticut Post. The Great Plains Development Authority on Wednesday signed the deed to take possession of 6,116 acres at the former Kansas Army Ammunition Plant, marking the official start of the effort for Labette County in southeast Kansas to convert the facility into the Great Plains Industrial Park.
