B-1, B-2 Bases to Host B-21 Bombers

B-1, B-2 Bases to Host B-21 Bombers

The Air Force has selected the three installations that now host the B-1 Lancer and the B-2 Spirit — Dyess AFB, Texas; Ellsworth AFB, S.D.; and Whiteman AFB, Mo. — as reasonable alternatives to host the new B-21 Raider aircraft beginning in the mid-2020s. A final basing decision isn’t expected until 2019 after environmental planning requirements have been completed, according to a news release. The Air Force doesn’t plan to retire the existing bombers until there are sufficient B-21s to replace them. No decision has been made on which location will receive the aircraft first.
