Elsewhere: Georgia Senate Passes Military Commission Bill; Marine Unit Conducts Training in Phoenix; Hunt Heroes Foundation Launched

The Georgia Senate has approved a measure to create a Georgia Joint Defense Commission, which would be responsible for advising state officials on military issues, and issuing recommendations to promote the growth of the military’s presence in the state and further the links between installations, their host communities and the defense industry. The commission also would lead the state’s effort to prepare for a new BRAC round. The bill now is being considered by the House, according to state Sen. Ben Watson (R). … About 100 Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit based in Camp Pendleton, Calif., are conducting exercises and drills throughout the Phoenix area this week, reports the Arizona Republic. The group is using the visit as an opportunity to carry out realistic urban training in an unfamiliar area before it deploys overseas this summer. … Hunt Military Communities has launched the Hunt Heroes Foundation, a nonprofit intended to support quality of life for the military families living in Hunt communities by funding projects in the areas of health, education, housing and the community overall, according to a press release.
