Officials named Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph as the preferred location to base the first Advanced Pilot Trainer (T-X), which will replace T-38C Talon aircraft at existing undergraduate pilot training installations. Basing the T-X at JB San Antonio, home to Air Force instructor pilot training, is an essential step to establishing a T-X instructor pilot pipeline, according to a press release. The selection also sets the conditions to transition to T-X training at the other flying training locations, including Columbus AFB, Miss.; Laughlin AFB, Texas; Sheppard AFB, Texas; and Vance AFB, Okla. The first T-X aircraft are expected to arrive at JB San Antonio in 2022.
