Robins AFB, Local Health Care Providers Look for Opportunities to Share Training

Officials at Robins Air Force Base and community health care providers are exploring partnerships to provide training physicians, nurses and other primary care practitioners need to obtain continuing medical education credits.

“The training requirement to keep our practitioners clinically current and competent is no different than the requirements for our pilots. The 78th MDG [Medical Group] simply cannot afford to keep doing business as it always has, and this is one way that we see a beneficial solution for the base and community,” said Col. Shari Silverman, commander of the 78th Medical Group.

The installation, located in Middle Georgia, and community health care providers are hoping to cut travel costs by offering required training locally, reported Robins Public Affairs.

With the same objective in mind, the 78th Dental Squadron last year hosted a dental conference that included continuing education training.

“The conference not only builds local civilian-military dental professional alliances, it also gives regional dental military professionals the ability to get continuing education credits for the cost of essentially gas,” said Lt. Col. Rene Saenz, commander of the 78th Dental Squadron.

Representatives from the 78th Civil Engineer Group and city and county offices also discussed the potential to collaborate on training opportunities at a meeting last month. In addition, the group looked at ways to partner with Houston County on paving projects.

“The benefits for the training would be a cost savings by sharing the costs between us,” said Becky McCoy, 78th Civil Engineering Squadron director.

Robins and the community have been forging partnerships for the past three years under the Air Force Community Partnership Program, according to the story. To date, the two have reached 100 agreements covering services such as fire protection, law enforcement, work study internships and youth recreation.
