Update: Army Completes Environmental Assessment for BCT Basing Decision

The Army did not identify significant environmental impacts from any of the basing alternatives for a new armored brigade combat team (BCT) that is being converted from an existing infantry BCT stationed at Fort Carson, Colo. As a result, the Army will not need to prepare an environmental impact statement, according to the March 30 Federal Register notice. The programmatic environmental assessment considered keeping the BCT at Fort Carson or stationing it at Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Riley, Kan.; or Fort Stewart, Ga. Moving the brigade would have a positive economic impact on the four candidate sites but have a moderately adverse one on the region surrounding Fort Carson, the assessment found.
