President Trump intends to nominate Robert McMahon to the newly created position of assistant secretary of defense (ASD) for sustainment, the White House announced last week. McMahon now is ASD for logistics and materiel readiness. DOD is merging that office with the ASD for energy, installations and environment into the new sustainment office as part of the reorganization plan triggered by the Feb. 1 split of the undersecretary for acquisition, technology and logistics office into two smaller organizations. McMahon retired from the Air Force as a major general in 2012 following 34 years in service; he last served as commander of the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center at Robins AFB, Ga. He then led the 21st Century Partnership, the local support group for Robins, from September 2012 through May 2014. … Second Lady Karen Pence hosted a breakfast Friday at the vice president’s residence for the Military Family Advisory Network, a community of spouses from all military branches, ahead of the network’s fifth anniversary and annual Solutions Summit. “I am encouraged by the organization’s commitment to address some of the greatest challenges facing military families such as military spouse employment, education, and the effects of frequent moves,” Pence said, according to a news release. “Their work on these issues will play an important role in helping to identify how we can better assist military families,” she said.
