Following House Vote, Defense Bill on Track for Quick Passage

The Senate could approve the conference report for the fiscal 2019 defense authorization bill as early as next Tuesday, putting the measure on pace for signing earlier than any time in the past 41 years. On Thursday, the House easily cleared the annual defense policy bill, 359-54. The last time the bill was sent to the president before the start of the new fiscal year was 2009, reported Defense News.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday filed cloture on final approval of the bill, setting up debate in the chamber next week. H.R. 5515 authorizes a $639 billion base defense budget and $69 billion for the overseas contingency operations account.
