In Other News: Secretary Names 2018’s Top Installations; Pease to be Featured in PFAS Study

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis last week announced five installations as the 2018 recipients of the Commander in Chief’s Annual Award for Installation Excellence — U.S. Army Garrison Fort Rucker, Ala.; MCAS Miramar, Calif.; NAS Whidbey Island, Wash.; Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz.; and Defense Distribution Depot San Joaquin, Calif. The award recognizes the outstanding efforts of the service members and civilians who operate and maintain installations, according to a news release. … Pease International Tradeport, N.H., the reuse project at the former Air Force base, will serve as the model test site for a national study by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry of the health impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) announced earlier this month. Work conducted at Pease will help refine the agency’s collection methods and analyses prior to rolling out the study to multiple sites across the country. Shaheen has worked with federal officials to make Pease the focus of the national study so that the specific circumstances surrounding contamination there can be better understood, according to a press release.
