The city of Virginia Beach, Va., and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story last month celebrated the opening of a joint use fire station on Fort Story, an initiative intended to reduce response times in the city’s North End and provide backup for Navy firefighters, reports Southside Daily. … The Navy will be able to meet its target of a 355-ship fleet as a result of congressional investment in shipbuilding and efforts to extend the service life of older vessels, Rear Adm. William Galinis, head of the service’s surface ship program office, said last week. Congress has been “very generous to the Navy, and to shipbuilding in particular,” Galinis said, reported Defense News. Upgrades can add five to 10 years of service, depending on the ship class, he said.
