Mattis Urges Pentagon’s New Chief Management Officer to ‘Set a Precedent’

At a ceremony Friday to swear in John Gibson II as DOD’s first chief management officer, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Gibson will spearhead efforts to support the third line of effort in the National Defense Strategy — reforming the department for efficiency, capability and affordability. The practices of the department are not set in stone, Mattis said, reported DOD News. The secretary said he expects Gibson to reform any practice that does not increase lethality or strengthen international partnerships. Gibson acknowledged the task he faces would be challenging. “Those who have succeeded at this type of change will tell you it takes five to seven years to see enduring results, but it has to start and build momentum,” he said.
