The Senate Appropriations Committee will see only a handful of new subcommittee chairs in the 116th Congress, with the Republican and Democratic leaders of the defense and military construction panels remaining the same, Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) and Vice Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) announced Wednesday. John Boozman (R-Ark.) will chair the military Construction and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee, with Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) the ranking member. Similarly, Shelby will retain the gavel for the defense panel, with Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) the ranking member.
The last significant change in leadership on the committee occurred last April after Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) stepped down as chairman. At that time, Shelby became chairman of the full committee and defense subcommittee, and Boozman shifted to the milcon panel.
