DOD has agreed to purchase 478 more of Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Lightning II, even as delays continue with the aircraft.
“I have full faith and confidence in the F-35 program and our ability to deliver F-35 combat capability anywhere in the world,” Ellen Lord, the Pentagon’s top acquisition official, told reporters at the Pentagon, according to Stars and Stripes. “Make no mistake, the F-35 is the world’s most advanced, lethal and interoperable aircraft ever developed.”
It is the largest F-35 order the Pentagon has ever placed.
Last year, then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis set a goal that 80% of the aircraft be ready for combat at any time. Last month, the F-35s were 73% mission-ready, Pentagon officials said.
